Description:

The L. William Seidman Research Institute with the W. P. Carey School of Business, at Arizona State University is seeking candidates who are interested in a postdoctoral research scholar position.  This position is a 12-month, non-tenure track, position with an initial appointment of 1 year.  This position has the possibility of an additional one-year renewal contingent upon performance, availability of funding and needs of the college.  This position is available under the supervision of the Director of the L. William Seidman Research Institute.

Salary: $80,000 per fiscal year

Hybrid working arrangements within Arizona will also be considered.

 

Job Description:

The postdoctoral research scholar will conduct applied economic research projects for clients in government, business, and university settings.  They undertake fiscal and economic impact modeling and implement other “fit-for-purpose” empirical analyses to address client questions and deliver insights of relevance to Arizona and its sub-state areas.

A postdoctoral research scholar is expected to analyze data, write reports, and engage with clients or the press to communicate key findings to general audiences with integrity and objectivity.  They frequently work independently on end-to-end execution of a project but can also function as a member of a team depending on experience of the researcher and scope of the project.

Seidman’s work environment offers the opportunity to gain experience akin to a consultancy whilst working in a dynamic, innovative University setting.  Assignments include responding to direct requests from the University President and Provost offices, as well as projects for major corporate, government, and policy institute clients.  Project work expands knowledge in regional economics, the economics of education, labor markets, and articulating the value of human and knowledge capital as university outputs.

Seidman’s team of economists span several centers and there exist possibilities for collaboration with staff in the Seidman Institute and two affiliated centers: the Center for Competitiveness and Prosperity Research and the JPMorgan Chase Economic Outlook Center.  The W. P. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts economic research, writing policy briefs, fiscal and economic impact studies, and other economic research, using output from a variety of computer-based tools.
  • Collaborates with technical staff to write reports and make presentations of findings to clients and potential media outlets.
  • Collects and evaluates economic data, creating and managing databases.
  • Actively participates in business development efforts by leveraging contacts in government, business, or community affairs.
  • Analyzes the Arizona economy, draws comparisons to the nation and with other states, and makes presentations of findings.
  • Assists in planning and design and execution of research projects and preparation of research proposals.
  • Conducts literature searches. Responds to requests for economic information from the media and general public and writes news releases.
  • Assists in the dissemination of Seidman work via social media, print, or other media outlets.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Economics.  Candidates must have a conferred Ph. D in hand or expected by August 2024.
  • Experience with data analysis.
  • Proficiency in writing Python.

 

Desired Qualifications & Experience:

  • Preferred U. S. citizenship or permanent residence status and do not need employer sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in STATA or R, Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in economic research, fiscal and economic impact analysis, regional economics, report writing, and business development.
  • Expertise in econometric packages such as EViews or open-source equivalents.
  • Proficiency in prompt engineering, data management, git, and AGILE.
  • Familiarity with Arizona economy and related institutions (e.g., tax structure, laws, school finance, government makeup).
